The Hotel Alte Werft was opened at the beginning of 1995 in the engineering hall in which the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, Emsland, manufactured compressors from 1870 until the company moved in 1975. Where some 30 years ago it smelled of oil and grease, today it smells of coffee. Where sweaty men in helmets and safety shoes toiled, hotel guests now help themselves to the breakfast buffet. The travelling crane with the huge hook rests under the glass roof in a pop mint colour. Models of Meyer ships decorate the walls. Mighty punching and drilling machines dominate the foyer and the restaurant Schnürboden. These relics of the industrial age give our hotel an unmistakable character.
